MAZIE JOHNSON (nee MARY BRIDGET FINNERTY) It saddens us deeply to announce the death of Mazie Johnson, on Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at Oakview Place Personal Care Home at the age of 85 years. Remaining to cherish her memory are her son, Martin of Edmonton, AB; daughters, Anne Smith (John) of Nanaimo, BC, and Pat Abram of Brampton, ON; grandchildren, Tim Johnson, Andrea Caciano and Geoff Abram; sisters, Olive Smith (Sean) of Winnipeg, Eileen OConnor of Ireland and Patsy Bunn of England; brother Michael Finnerty (Rita) of Zephyr Hills, Florida; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mazie was predeceased by her siblings, Noel, Brian and Peggy Finnerty and Lily Stearne, all in the United Kingdom. Mazie and her children left Ireland by ship in December, 1947 to join her husband George in Churchill, MB and to start a new life in Canada, quite unprepared for a Canadian Prairie winter. It was in Churchill that Mazie started her lifelong career in the hospitality industry, working in the military canteen. She soon became Manager until the family moved to Winnipeg in 1956. In 1960, Mazie joined the staff of the Charterhouse Hotel where fierce independence and her passion for customer service stood her in good stead until her retirement in 1984. Her red hair and feisty Irish nature were her trademarks. An Irish Wake would be fitting, however, keeping with the Canadian tradition, a Funeral Service honouring Mazies life will be held on Tuesday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m. in the Oakview Place Personal Care Home, 2395 Ness Ave. with Deacon Robert Gate officiating. Our family and friends are eternally grateful to the staff of Oakview Place, in particular 3 North, for their friendship, care and concern for Mazie in her last months.
