GARY REED SMITH Suddenly on June 2, 2004 a kind and gentle soul left this world. Gary Reed Smith, 63, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away. Gary is survived by Nancy, his beloved wife of 37 years; his daughter Barbara and son-in-law Mike Brazeau; his sons, Brian Smith (Amy) and Brad Smith. He is deeply mourned and missed by grandchildren, Mitchell, Robyn, Jaimie and Tanner. Surviving Gary are his brothers, Jeff (Judy) Smith and Peter (Anne) Smith. He was predeceased by his mother Marion, and father Arthur Smith. Gary was born on February 15, 1941 in Kenmore, NY, later moving to Cleveland, OH where he met his wife Nancy. They had three children together and eventually moved to Winnipeg to raise their family. Gary successfully achieved a Ph.D. in Physics. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University and went on to teach and engage in research at the University of Manitoba for 24 years. The scope of his research afforded the opportunity to travel to many places including Hawaii and Germany. Gary cherished and loved his occupation as a Professor of Physics. Gary was employed at Convergys in l997 and enjoyed the staff and his work very much until his death. Gary pursued many interests and hobbies during his lifetime. It would be remiss of us not to acknowledge the many years he devoted to Scouts. He loved the experience and related a multitude of stories involving this special time in his life. Gary reserved a part of his great loving heart for animals. He joined the Manitoba Cat Club with Nancy and Bradley in 1983. He was an active member of the club for many years. His duties included Vice-President, President and "umpteenth" show manager positions. He chaired committees for a number of years concerning the welfare of animals. The show halls of the American Cat Fanciers Associations will be lonelier for his absence. Gary accepted the challenges of life with dignity and grace. He possessed a special ability to turn tribulations into blessings and embraced them with fervour and joy. Those of us who have had the good fortune cross his path have benefited from his friendship. We will forever treasure his kindness, his gentleness and will commit to a loving memory his twinkling eyes and his vivacious smile. He will not be forgotten. June 3, 2004 Dearest Dad: Thank you for your unconditional love. Thank you for your funny stories. Thank you for your sparkling eyes; those eyes that brimmed with love for your family. Thank you for teaching us all the lessons of life. Thank you for never letting an "I love you" go unsaid. Dad, we love you forever. Rest in peace until we meet again. -Barb Flowers are gratefully declined, however, donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society will be gladly accepted in his memory. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 8 at the Victoria General Hospital Chapel at 2:30 p.m.
