GORDON HARRY HAMILTON Soaring with "The Eagles" and with friends at his side, Gordon aged 62, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2004 at the Riverview Health Centre after a courageous battle with cancer. Gordon was born in the Trenton Hospital on May 24, 1942, the oldest son of Perry and Laura Jean (Pope) Hamilton. During his early years in Belleville, he was involved in the Hasting County calf, grain and poultry 4H clubs, receiving top awards in the poultry club. Being community oriented, Gordon became a member of the YMCA board of directors, served as president of the YMCA Ys men club and chairman of the 17 team United Church Softball League. Gordon, a respected business man in the Belleville community, operated the West End Laundromat and Dry Cleaning Centre. In 1962 he joined Agriculture Canada at the Belleville Entomology Research Institute, and in 1972 was transferred to the Cereal Research Centre located at the University of Manitoba. Upon arriving in Winnipeg Gordon continued his community spirit and became an active member of the Fort Garry Kinsmen Club. During many years of service with the club Gordon served on numerous committees and as president in 1978-79. Gordon retired on March 31, 1997 from Agriculture Canada after 35 years of dedicated public service. Retirement allowed him additional time to nurture his flowers that were the envy of the neighbourhood, host social events for his many friends, tour Manitoba with his shiny red car or red Suzuki, attend Bomber, Moose and Goldeyes games, and enjoy many hours of music. Mother Laura Jean, father Perry, brother Walter and nephew Peter predeceased Gordon. He leaves to cherish his memory his brother Garnet (Anna) nieces, Amy and Dianne; his YMCA, Westminster United Church (Belleville), Fort Garry Kinsmen Club, Agriculture Canada, Hillmartin Drive, and his many other friends. We have truly lost a very special person. Gordon and his friends wish to thank Dr. Schroeder and Nurse Kim Paradoski of CancerCare Manitoba, and the Riverview Health Centre 3 East wing staff for their care and support. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m. in Thomson "In the Park", 1291 McGillivray Blvd. in Winnipeg. Viewing will take place one half hour prior to service. A second service will follow on Saturday, October 9 at Burke Funeral Home, 150 Church St., in Belleville, ON with interment following in the Belleville Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so wish, donations in Gordons memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. We will find comfort in knowing that Gordon is finally free of pain.
