MABEL MARGARET HADDEN Mabel was born at her grandparents home in Neche, North Dakota, Saturday, May 8, 1920. She received her education around the Emerson area. After receiving her grade 9, Mabel then stayed at home and worked on the farm. Since her younger brother Arthur was inflicted with polio, Mabel and her older brother George brought in the crops for the next couple of years. Mabel worked the binder and George drove the tractor. In 1943 Mabel and her oldest sister Alma went to Winnipeg and worked in a sewing factory. While working in the sewing factory Mabel met Jenny, the sister of Mabels future husband Bill. Bill was so taken by Mabel that he wore a suit every time he visited her, and asked her to marry him on their first date. In 1944, Mabel and Bill were married in the midst of a November snow storm. Mabels brother Arthur pulled the wedding car through the snow, as there were no gravel roads. In 1946 Bill and Mabel started building their house in Fort Garry, with Edna and Art who helped them with the construction every weekend until it was finished. Mabel and Bill started a family in 1946, at which time Mabel stayed home to raise their three children, Darlene, Ron, and Linda. Mabel, along with Bill, continued to be active in the Foresters and belonged to the Academy Lanes bowling league for a number of years. Mabel and Bill continued to build their family by welcoming Vern (husband to Darlene), Debbie (wife of Ron), and eventually grandchildren and great grandchildren.
