Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALEXANDER "XANDE" HYLAND I.ENG. CET, CRSP, AFCASI, AMRAES It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Xande Hyland of Winnipeg, on Saturday, October 23, 2004. Xande is survived by his wife, Irene "Betty"; his four children, Mary Krieger (Kelvin), Anne Carey, William (Scelena) and Alan (Sharla) grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, Jessica, Heather, Payton and Liam; and great-grandchild Emily. A light has gone from our lives. Born in London, England on April 19, 1930, Xande attended London College of Choristers, Marylebone Grammar School and Southall Technical College. He apprenticed at Fairey Aviation before his National Service with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. In 1956, Xande joined the Bristol Aircraft (Western) Ltd., coming to work in Winnipeg that year. Through his work, he became a familiar face at many Canadian fighter bases and the Directorate of Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering in Ottawa. He formed one of the first Plant Safety Committees in Manitoba qualifying as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional. Visitors to the Western Canadian Aviation Museum can view examples of his work in the aviation industry. An original member of the Manitoba Model Buffs chapter of the International Plastic Modellers Society, he displayed and judged scale models for IPMS and the Manitoba Model Soldier Society. Xande loved singing, beginning as a boy chorister in 1935. He sang with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir, the Festival Opera Singers, the Winnipeg Pops Chorus and many others. Xande helped found the Festival Opera Singers and sang in some of the first concerts of the Manitoba Opera. Piano bars and later karaoke allowed him to continue sharing his music with others. He will be remembered for the enjoyment he gave through his music and for his extensive knowledge which he unstintingly shared with all who asked. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 29 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Andrews Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations in Xandes memory may be made to any of the organizations he enjoyed in life.
