Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryESTHER MATAS (nee STEIMAN) Peacefully at Seven Oaks Hospital in Winnipeg on November 6, 2004 after a full and happy life, Esther Matas passed away at the age of 92. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Dr. Harry Matas. Esther grew up in the North End of Winnipeg, the third of seven children. She had a great love for people, music and art. Esther was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all members of her family. Esther was a gracious hostess, whose home was always filled with music and laughter. There was always room at her table - whether it was for 40 family members and friends for a holiday meal or a stranger warming up over a cup of tea. Esthers chocolate chip and sugar cookies - and the miles they travelled to far - flung children and grandchildren - are legendary. Her kindness, generosity, optimism and cheerfulness were an inspiration to all who knew her. In addition to her dedication to her family, Esther was also involved in the larger community through volunteer work at her synagogue, as well as a variety of other charitable and social justice organizations. Esther is survived by her three sons, David, Manny, Robert (Alicia) her four grandchildren, Anna, Jared (Cheryl), Sylvia and Max (Danya) two sisters and one brother; as well as several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at Chesed Shel Emes on November 7. Donations in honour of her profound and unstinting love of children could be made to the Manitoba Chapter of The Childrens Wish Foundation of Canada or to the Winnipeg Branch of Jewish Child and Family Services.
