HARRY GEORGE STEIN SR. On November 5, 2004, Harry Stein passed away at Victoria General Hospital at the age of 81 years. Left to forever cherish his memory is his beloved wife Andree; his sons, Ken (Leslie), Brian (Judy), Gordon (Denise) and Harry Jr.; his daughter Deborah Hopkins; stepsons, Pierre (Karen) Bartlette, Charles (Marianne) Hardy; and stepdaughters Simone and Jacqueline Bartlette as well as 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Harry was predeceased by his parents Charles (1961) and Matilda (1978) his third son Eric (1986) and granddaughter Kelly Lynn Hopkins (1988). Harry is survived by his siblings, Pearl, Arthur, Gordon, Shirley and Della Mae. Harry was born August 24, 1923 in Melville, SK, later moving to Manitoba and growing up in Winnipeg. He enlisted in Canadas military with Lord Strathcona Horse Artillery on April 18, 1941 and went overseas during the Second World War landing in Glasgow, Scotland on November 13, the same year. He met and married his first wife Marjorie in Glasgow on September 19, 1942. He left Glasgow in December, 1943 to defend our freedom in Italy and subsequently to Holland in February, 1945 where he was the first Canadian soldier to bring news of liberation to the town of Ermelo. After the Second World War, Harry returned to Canada in October, 1945 and joined the Canadian National Railway in Winnipeg where he was employed until August 15, 1950. He then returned to the military service joining the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (RCHA) until his retirement from the military as a Master Warrant Officer in February, 1970. During his re-enlistment he was awarded a medal for his duty in the Korean Conflict. After retirement from the military, Harry accepted a position with the Manitoba Provincial Government in 1971 working in Winnipeg and Thompson, MB. Harry met Andree (nee Charette) on August 28, 1972 and they married on April 13, 1974. They lived in Thompson until Harry retired in 1984 at which time they moved to St. George, MB. They moved back to Winnipeg in 1996. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jeanne Young, doctors, nurses, and staff at the Victoria General Hospital 5th floor for their compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations can be made in Harrys memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3 or a charity of your choice. Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A reception will follow.
