HARRY E. GORDON On Thursday, November 4, 2004, Harry Elliot Gordon, aged 85 years, died at home. Harry was born in Chowan, a small village in Russia, to Hymie and Helen Goldenberg, on the second day of Rosh Hashana in 1919. He came with his parents to Winnipeg in 1921. He endured hardship as a boy and young man growing up in the north end of Winnipeg. Harry met Anna Mitchell and they were married in 1943. He attended law school with Annas support and graduated in 1950. He practiced law for 54 years, first with Kushner, Breen and Gordon and later as a sole practitioner, in collaboration with Morse Silden and Ron Olesky. He was appointed Queens Counsel in 1980. He served on the Board of Regents of the University of Winnipeg, the Manitoba Transport Board, and the Public Utilities Board. He was recently recognized for his work with the nine communities of South East Tribal Council. As a lawyer, Harry was a strategist and a problem solver. He devoted his law practice to helping people. Harry had a keen interest in ideas and language; he read widely and was committed to social justice. He was a man of integrity, ethics and infectious wit. Harry had great determination and self-discipline: he went to work every day until just before his death and walked on his treadmill daily. Harrys family was of paramount importance. He is survived by his wife Anna; his children, Ellen (Keith), David (Evan), Sheila (Glenn) seven grandchildren, Sky, Michael, Evan, Jessie, Erin, Rebekka, and Zoe; his sister Shirley (Jack) Wolodarsky and her family. The family wishes to thank the W.R.H.A. Palliative Care program and Home Care program which enabled the family to honour Harrys wish to stay at home and not return to the hospital. Interment has taken place at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery. Shiva has been concluded. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.
