Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANDREW SCHAEN 1921 - 2004 On November 9, 2004 in Winnipeg, Andy peacefully passed away at the age of 83. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Gail (Larry) of Blenheim, New Zealand, Derek, Leesa (Randy), Karen (Richard) of Winnipeg; and five grandchildren, Ryan, Erin, Kirsti, Rachel and Jeffrey. He also leaves his brothers, Walter, Edward (Elsie) and Tom (Maryanne) sisters, Hilda and Susie; and sisters-in-law, Olga and Joanne; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret; brothers, Paul, Tony and Wayne; and his sisters, Hetty and Annie. Andy was born on June 7, 1921 in Winnipeg and grew up in Winnipegs beloved North End. After living in St. Vital for a short time the family moved to North Kildonan where he resided until his passing. Andy served his country during the Second World War as a member of the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry, participating in the liberation of Italy in 1943. Returning from overseas after the war he eventually enjoyed a long and successful career as a public servant, working for the Canadian Grain Commission, where he rose to the position of Chief Grain Inspector of Canada. In 1976 Dad retired and enjoyed over 25 years of active retirement. Along with longtime friend Sid McKay he was a member of the PPCLI Veterans Association. He was also a long standing member of the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing and treating friends and family to dinner. Known as "Handy Andy" to some, Dad always had some building project on the go, usually for someone else, whether they needed it or not. He was a witty, good natured guy who was very generous to family and friends. We will all miss him very much. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 24, at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A reception will follow in the Chapel Lawn Reception Centre.
