RALPH HOWARD SHIELDS It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ralph Shields. Ralph passed away peacefully at Jocelyn House Palliative Care on November 15, 2004 at the age of 65. Ralph will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sons, David (Sharon) and Brent (Kathy) his grandchildren, Mathew, Dianna, Jessica, and Chelsey; his sister Jean (Erv) as well as numerous relatives and friends. Ralph was predeceased by his brother Gary, his father Howard, his mother Florence and his wife Violet (Vi). Ralph was born in Ridgedale, SK, on Christmas day 1938. His family moved to Sherridon in Northern Manitoba in 1944, where he spent most of his public school years. In 1952 the family moved to Atikokan, ON, where he spent his teenage years and graduated high school. In 1961 Ralph travelled through the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Europe. He returned to Atikokan to work with Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. He was transferred to Winnipeg in 1962, which is where he met Violet Norberg. They married in 1963 and moved to Dryden, ON, where he worked for Alex Wilson Coldstream for 25 years. Ralph and Vi eventually moved back to Winnipeg, where both boys were living, and was employed by Interlake Publishing. Ralph was a very intelligent, gentle, giving and loving person. He made many close friends throughout his life. He was very involved and passionate about politics, heading up campaigns for Liberal Party candidates. Ralph was an accomplished artist and has left behind many oil paintings for people to enjoy. He was also an avid reader and history buff. The family would like to thank all the staff at Jocelyn House for their care and compassion in making Ralph as comfortable as possible in his final weeks and days. Cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held Monday, November 22 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jocelyn House, 177 Egerton Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2M 2W7.
