KATARINA (KAY) KIRCHHOFER (nee REICHARDT) "NANA" Peacefully on Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at the Riverview Health Centre, Katarina Kirchhofer of Winnipeg, passed away at the age of 90 years. Left to cherish her memory is her loving family. Kay is survived by her only daughter, Etheline (Etty) and husband Larry Schaefer. Also her grandchildren, Brian Schaefer, Kathy (Bob) Carter, Susan (Darren) Shaw and her great-grandchildren, Justin and Jillian Carter and Carissa and Braden Shaw. Nana was predeceased by her husband Joseph in 1981; both her parents, Josef and Teresia Reichardt; brothers, Franz, Josef, Peter; and sister Barbara in infancy. Katarina was born April 4, 1914 in Karlsdorf, Yugoslavia. In 1932 she left her mother and brothers and immigrated to Canada to join her brother Joe. In Winnipeg she she met and married the love of her life Joseph on April 30, 1933. A year later they were blessed with their only daughter Etheline. Nana worked tirelessly to provide for her family. After Nana and Pops established their home in Winnipegs North End, they took on the role of caretakers at the Canadian German Society at the corner of Mountain and McGregor. After moving back to their house, Nana assumed other domestic positions outside her home. Upon retirement, Kay took great pride and joy in caring for her grandchildren and later on for her great-grandchildren. Nana enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and baking. Never did a special occasion pass that there was not one of Nanas famous tortes on the table. There were just never enough hours in the day for Nana! A celebration of Nanas life will be held on Tuesday, November 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy., with interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Pastor Bruce Gelhorn will be officiating. The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to Drs. Krepart, Lotocki and Haywood, and Irene of CancerCare Manitoba. We would also like to thank homecare for all their support, especially Darlene for her patience with Nana. Special thanks to all the staff on the palliative care ward, Third Floor East, Riverview Health Centre for their wonderful care and compassion. To Betty and Andrea for being there. Pallbearers will be Brian Schaefer, Bob Carter, Darren Shaw, Justin Carter, Robert Tropak, and John Tropak.
