EVYLIN AGNES BERGEN (nee EPP) 1923 - 2004 Evylin died peacefully on December 1, 2004 comforted by family. Throughout her later years Mom dealt stoically with a variety of medical challenges, including diabetes, stroke, partial paralysis, and the loss of the majority of her vision to macular degeneration. Whenever she acknowledged the frustration of her limitations, she would simply end with the statement, "Well, but so it goes..." Born on a farm near Laird, SK in 1923, Mom was one of 11 children. She is survived by her sisters, Rosella (Bergen) and Darlene (Bergman) and brothers, Orlando and Ronald. Mom married Jacob Bergen in 1942. Together they raised a family of four, Rodger (Nancy), Jim (Terry), Verginia (Monty Aldous) and Brian (Mary). Over the years, her family continued to grow to include nine grandchildren, their spouses and partners and five great-grandchildren. To her deep sorrow, her dearest love and best friend Jake predeceased her in 1999. Evylin and Jake lived in Fort Garry from the 1950s until Dads death. Their neighbours were also their close friends, and their joint love of gardening made their home a summer spectacle of colour, and a neighbourhood source of fresh vegetables. Their home was a gathering place where unexpected guests were always welcomed and well fed. In addition to raising her family, Mom worked many years in the food services industry, primarily at Van Burens Restaurant, which used to occupy the junction of University Crescent and Pembina Highway. Mom was a skilled seamstress and knitter. She also loved to read, loved to play the organ, loved to sing, and it was a great loss to her when her stroke robbed her of those abilities. For a time, the CNIB Talking Book Library partially filled that need. All those she touched throughout her life are going to miss her greatly. We wish to express our grateful thanks to Dr. R.J. Hayward, Moms physician for many years, and to the caring staff on the third floor at Victoria Hospital. You made Moms many visits as your patient as comfortable as possible. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 6 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Viewing will take place one half hour prior to the service. Interment and reception will follow. In lieu of the transient beauty of flowers, a donation to the CNIB, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or your favourite charity would express a lasting tribute. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715 Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca.
