ROBERT SHELDON McCUTCHEON Robert Sheldon McCutcheon of Carman, MB passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 1, 2004, in the Carman Memorial Hospital with family at his side. Sheldon was predeceased in 1998 by his wife of 57 years Jean Isabelle Downs, whom he loved deeply as well as by his brother Lyle and his sister Verna Collier. He will be lovingly remembered by his surviving sister Edith Hannah of Beantown, ON; his sister-in-law Mildred McCutcheon of Carman; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian of Duncan, BC and Gillian of Cobble Hill, BC and grandchildren, Bea (Rick Fowler) and Rob; his son Wayne (Brenda Hunt) of Ottawa, ON and grandchildren, Drew (Glenda Rodriguez) and great-grandson Benjamin and Emma (Craig Calvert) his son Blake (Cathy Driedger) of Neepawa, MB and grandchildren, Cathy Jean and Carol Lynn (Lance Schafer) his son Shawn (Bonnie Biggar) of Carman and grandchildren, Warren and Danine; his special friend Irene Woodfield of Carman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sheldon was born on November 6, 1917, on his parents farm (Robert and Allie nee Clark) near Homewood, MB. He attended school at Homewood and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1938 with a Diploma in Agriculture. He farmed with his father for a few years prior to purchasing the present farm in 1939, located on the Boyne School section. The farm continues to be operated today by his son Shawn and his grandson Warren. Sheldon married Jean in 1941. The same year he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he trained and served as an aircraft mechanic. He was stationed in Brandon, MB, St. Thomas, ON, Vancouver, BC and finally, in 1942, at Sea Island, BC until the end of the war. In the following years, Sheldon and Jean built their farm and raised their family. Sheldon loved to grow things, whether in the fields or in the garden, and often picked sweet peas and other flowers to bring to Jean. He also loved to learn, stayed current with the latest farming trends and always sought out the latest technology and equipment. He was a farmer who insisted on his crops being clean and the rows straight. Of note, he grew sugar beets for 30 years and was a Select Seed Grower. Sheldon was also actively involved in the community, where he led 4-H Sugar Beet and Beef Clubs and sat on various local boards. Sheldon had a love of life and approached new ideas with an open mind. He read widely, was always current on national and international events and ready to discuss and debate the issues of the day. He and Jean attended the theatre at every opportunity and travelled extensively around Canada and the world after they retired from farming. A private family interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Carman on Saturday, December 4, to be followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the Carman United Church, with Rev. Catherine Waldie officiating. Sheldons family wishes to thank all those involved in his care over the past two years. Their kindness and concern will always be remembered. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to South Central Cancer Resource, 160 Stephen St., Morden, MB R6M 1T3. Doyles Funeral Home of Carman in care of arrangements. www.doyleschapels.com
