Dad was a very kind and generous man who never judged anyone and treated everyone as his equal. He has instilled many of these fine qualities in his children. Dads love for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was unconditional. Afi will be remembered with love and affection. At a very early age Dad became a fisherman setting his first net with his father on Lake Winnipeg. Sixty years later his final net was set with his son, Steven. During these years Dad fished many locations on the Lake making life long friends. Not only was Dad an able and skilled fisherman he was also a talented carpenter and mechanic. Dad was very proud of his Icelandic Heritage. In 1998 Dad made his first trip to Iceland where he was treated like royalty by many relatives and especially one close family friend, Helga Gudmunsdottir. Sharing his fond memories of this trip with his family will stay in our hearts forever. A memorial service will be held at the Gimli Lutheran Church on Thursday, December 9 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor George Johnson officiating. In keeping with Dads wishes a private graveside service will be held prior to the memorial service. Honorary Pallbearers will be Raymond Smith, Gerald Bennett, Calvin Firman, Dave Skoropata, Gordie and Gusti Jacobson. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. R.C. Patel, physician and long time family friend for being so compassionate towards our family. "Thank you from the bottom of our hearts" to the nursing staff at the Gimli Community Health Center and Palliative Home Care Service who treated our Dad like their own - you are all special "angels". Dad has touched the hearts of many and his memory will be cherished by all. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in Walters memory to the Gimli Community Health Centre "Healing Garden", Box 250, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0. Dear Dad, We hope you have found the perfect fishing spot in heaven, may the fish be plentiful. We love you with all our hearts Dad/Afi and will miss you always.
