JOHN D. (JACK) MONTGOMERY Q.C.
Date of Passing: Dec 07, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN D. (JACK) MONTGOMERY Q.C. It is with profound sadness that Jacks family announces his passing on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at age 77. He is survived by his loving wife Jennifer, brother Robert (Dixie Anne), sister Dorothy Cameron (George), brothers-in-law Bill and George Marchuk, sister-in-law Mary Chernesky and their families. Born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), the son of missionary parents, the family moved to Toronto when Jack was in his early years. He was educated in Toronto and attended law school both at Osgood Hall and the University of Manitoba. He received his call to the Bar in 1960 and articled with the Winnipeg Law Firm of Fillmore and Riley. Jack joined the Department of Justice in 1962 and became one of the leading prosecutors in Manitoba. For decades he prosecuted the most serious criminal cases. He served as Chief Prosecutor for the City of Winnipeg and developed a special bond with many police officers which lasted long after his retirement. He subsequently became Director of Criminal Prosecutions and General Counsel in the Department of Justice. Jack developed a unique personal style, which on many occasions mesmerized all persons in the courtroom. He had a mischievous sense of humour and together with his great presence and marvellous command of the language he earned the affectionate title "Hollywood Jack". In both his personal and professional life Jack was a true gentleman. He was kind and compassionate and always ready to lend a helping hand. He treated all people with dignity. In return, he earned the respect of all who came in contact with him. He had a strong sense of justice, great empathy for victims of crime and high ethical standards, all of which he displayed in his role as Crown Prosecutor. Upon retirement, he remained active and became the successful author of three books which covered major criminal cases that he had prosecuted. Unfortunately, Jack was not able to finish his last book which dealt with the murder of a Winnipeg Police Officer. Jack was loved and admired by many and will be very much missed by family and friends. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jacks life will take place at Westminster United Church, Maryland and Westminster, on Friday, December 17 at 1:30 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. For further information call Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 885-9715.

Although my Uncle Jack was not by blood, he was our chosen family by my parents, for which I will always be grateful! I adored everything about him; his swirly slick hair, the smell of his pipe and his infectious, bigger than life personality. He treated my sister and I like princesses and spoiled us with gifts, his time and with grand gestures. I cherish the memories of my childhood with him 30ish years ago, and still display the keepsakes he gave me. I talk to my children about him and make sure they get to know him, keeping his memory alive. I love and miss my Uncle Jack. Jack was a true gentleman. He was a great mentor, and teacher. Jack personified both justice and kindness. - Posted by: Will Hechter (Friend) on: Dec 15, 2004
