SAUL GILMORE It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Saul Gilmore, at the age of 80, on December 4, 2004, with his family by his side. He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife of 47 years, Bernice; his children, Gary and Sharon Gilmore, Howie and Jodi Gilmore; his grandchildren, Michael, Rachel, Zachary, Becca and Myles; his sisters-in-law, Les Gilmore and Elaine Paul, his nieces and nephews, his numerous cousins and his many friends. Saul was predeceased by his parents, Ruby and Julius Gilmore, and his best friend, his brother, Max Gilmore. Saul was born in Winnipeg on August 28, 1924. He grew up on a dairy farm in North Kildonan, located beside what is now Gilmore Avenue. During the Second World War, Saul joined the Air Force, and worked as an airplane mechanic. When he completed his service, he returned to Winnipeg and worked as a health inspector. He then went into business with his brother, Max, starting Gilmore Construction and Gilmore Realty. His business legacy is many of the fine homes, apartment buildings and office buildings that grace our city. Saul dealt with all his business associates, clients and tenants with honesty and integrity. All who had business dealings with him respected him and commented that he was the nicest person to work for and with. Saul had a passion, and that was family. Spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren made him happier than he thought one person should be allowed to get. He took unimaginable joy in being Zaida. Family dinners were cherished moments. Being with his grandchildren and watching them participate in sporting events, dance recitals and band performances were absolute highlights. Saul was also a lifetime sports fanatic. As a player, in his youth, he excelled on the baseball diamond and the hockey rink. In his later years, he continued to play baseball in the Manitoba 60 Plus Baseball League. As a fan, he loved his Winnipeg Jets, and almost never missed a game. Our family would like to thank the incredible doctors and nurses at Seven Oaks General Hospital (ICU and 5th floor, units 4 and 6) for their dedication and compassion. We also wish to thank Saul's doctor, Dr. Sheldon Koven. Funeral services, led by Rabbi Henry Balser and Tracy Kasner Greaves, were held on December 6 at Congregation Etz Chayim with interment at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael Gilmore, Zachary Gilmore, Judi Gilmore, Rory Paul, Ryan Paul and Mark Berkowitz. It was a tribute to Saul that so many came to pay their final respects. If desired, donations can be made in Saul's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Parkinson Society, or a charity of one's choice. Saul was a gentle soul who epitomized the four-letter word, nice . We love you and we will never forget you.
