BARBARA MARY JANET MCALLISTER (nee HAY) Unexpectedly but peacefully, at her residence, our cherished mother, grandmother, aunt and friend passed away on December 17, 2004. She was predeceased by her loving husband John McAllister in 1998, sister Agnes Ross, brother Douglas Hay and son-in-law Steven Stecker. Barbara was born September 2, 1928 in Austin, MB. After her mother passed away at a young age, she moved with her father, sister and brother to Winnipeg in 1942. She eventually worked at B.A. Robinson, and in 1953, married John McAllister, soon after staying home to raise their four children. Barbara spoke fondly of the family's years spent in Ottawa from 1967 to 1975. During this time she worked as a secretary at Laurentian High School where her sons attended, and after moving back to Winnipeg, worked for the School Division, most latterly at River Heights Junior High, until her retirement. Barbara was a vibrant, animated and enthusiastic person, and at her best in close, personal relationships. Her integrity, creativity and boundless optimism enriched the lives of all who knew her. She was self-sacrificing and passionate about her family, and in her own words, was made to be a mother. Barb was almost as passionate about her many projects, especially the family cottage at Victoria Beach, and the public affairs of her beloved country, Canada. She leaves to mourn, her grieving family: son John (Leona) and grandchildren Jonathan, Brittany, Shannon and Carling; son Bill (Denise); daughter Margo (Dennis) Smith, grandchildren Logan and Veronica; and daughter Megan Stecker. She will be sadly missed by sister-in-law Irene Sample of BC, Elsie Lynn Westgate and Ruth (Warren) Tuttle both of Alberta, as well as wonderful cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends, whom she loved. Barbara always took quiet solace in her faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and in the promise of heaven. A private family service will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 4:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Dr. Brett Cane at St. Aidan's Church. Thank you to so many for your kindnesses. Flowers very gratefully declined.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Many years ago I met your parents at Victoria Beach . I always found your Mom to be a warm, sunny and friendly person who radiated such brightness. At the time I was only a teenager and frequently would be asked to babysit two youngsters. Years later, while employed at Seaforth Hospital, I had the chance meeting of one of these young men. Brought back cherished memories. Although painful times, I realize how precious are the memories others express of our loved one.. My sympathy is with your family at this time.
