Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN ISABELLE MONK August 10, 1916 - December 24, 2004 It is with great sorrow our family announces that our beloved wife and mother, Helen Isabelle (Jacklin) Monk, aged 88, peacefully passed away, with her daughter at her side, on December 24, 2004 at Victoria General Hospital. She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 60 years, Clifton; and her children, Anne and Philip; her sister Muriel (William) Grier of Ottawa, ON and in-laws, Marion and Orval Becker and Marjorie Monk of Elmwood, ON; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was born on the family farm in Brant Township, Bruce County, ON and was raised with her three sisters, with whom she maintained a life-long close relationship. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario and the Ontario College of Education. After teaching for two years, during the war she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a navigation mathematician in Dartmouth, NS. After marriage in Nova Scotia, where she assisted in her husband's rural ministry, Helen and Clifton moved to Winnipeg, with her husband's appointment to the national headquarters of the Canadian Lutheran Council. Winnipeg became their home for over 50 years and here she raised her family. She was a founding member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Women at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, engaged in a variety of volunteer activities in the community, and worked for a time as the coordinator of volunteers at the Age and Opportunity Bureau. A devoted wife and mother, her life centred around her family and home, supporting the career endeavours of her husband and the activities of her children. While enjoying gardening, decorating and cultural activities, reading was her passion. She was a gentle and kind person, always thinking of other people before herself. The family would like to thank Dr. H. Domke, the staff at Misericordia Cornish 6 and at Victoria General Hospital emergency department, Unit 3 and the medical rehabilitation unit for their care of Helen. Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 600 Cambridge St., on Wednesday, December 29 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at a later date in Elmwood, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen's memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6 or the Winnipeg Ostomy Association, 204-825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5.
