ETHEL GERTRUDE OPLETA (nee LENNON) December 2, 1918 - December 23, 2004 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ethel at the age of 86. She died peacefully after a long battle with cancer with her loving daughter at her side. Ethel is survived by her son Gordon, and her daughter Karen (Kent) Madsen and two grandchildren, Joshua and Tyler Madsen of St. Albert, AB. Ethel was predeceased by her parents; her husband Allan; and her sisters, Nell, Annie, and Cecelia. She will be extremely missed by her family and numerous friends. Ethel was a very strong and independent woman, who enjoyed life to the fullest. Her early years were spent in Elm Creek, MB. She moved to Winnipeg in 1938, where she met and married Allan. Two children soon followed, and she spent the next several years as a homemaker. She was very involved with the Down's Syndrome Society and Special Olympics, where her son Gordon competed. She remained active throughout her life, and could be seen swimming laps in the lake when everyone else was trying to remain warm on shore. Ethel loved to garden and visit with her friends, and it was those friendships that helped give her the strength to fight as long and as hard as she did. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, December 29 at 1:00 p.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The family expresses sincere thanks to the staff at Riverview Health Centre and the Grace Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they gave Ethel during the last weeks of her life. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke or to CancerCare Manitoba. THOMSON IN THE PARK FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 McGillivray Blvd. 925-1120
