He was born in Folkestone, Kent, England on May 28, 1919. Albert is survived by his loving wife Theresa, of 51 years of marriage; sons, Greg and John (Jennifer); daughters, Deborah (Bill Davis), Elizabeth MacDonald (Dan Bracke) and Sandra (Eric Garsonnin) who loved him dearly. He is lovingly remembered by grandchildren, Jason MacDonald (Heather Reimer), David MacDonald (Lori Ann Rochon), Andrew Fawcett and Nadine Bracke-Nand; great-grandchildren, Caleb MacDonald, Zachary Bracke-Nand, Brittany Bracke-Nand and Hanna Rochon; brother Leslie (Martha); sister Denise Avery; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; especially his friend of 80 years, Bob Van Camp and his family, who were a cherished part of Al's life. During The Second World War, Al served in 14 Fighter Squadron and 125 Wing of the RCAF in the Aleutian Islands, Normandy and northwestern Europe as a wireless electrical mechanic servicing fighter aircraft. On return to civilian life, Al joined Trans Canada Airlines, where he worked as a radio mechanic until 1956, when the airline radio operations were transferred to Montreal. A confirmed Manitoban, Al chose to stay in Winnipeg and joined CBC as a TV maintenance mechanic. When the first videotape recording machines arrived in Winnipeg, Al was appointed the first Canadian VTR operator and maintenance technician. He worked in this area continuously throughout the VTR expansion years. In 1964, Al accepted a transfer to CBC engineering headquarters in Montreal, giving in to the need to leave his beloved Winnipeg. He, Terry and family lived in Montreal until his retirement in 1981, when they returned to Winnipeg. Al served for several years both as the CBC representative and as president of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, where he established many of the video standards and practices that are in use today. A Celebration of Al's Life will be held on Saturday, January 1 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Blvd., with Rev. Gordon Dixon officiating. Interment will take place in the spring. Our family would like to thank Dr. Gooi, Dr. Joshua, Dr. Borrett, Dr. Murray and staff of 5 North at Grace General Hospital and especially homecare caregivers, Jackie, Maida and Kim for their dedicated and compassionate care of Dad.
