ALICE SUTHERLAND DONNELLY (MCCARTNEY) On Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at the Grace Hospital, Mum peacefully passed away. Mum is survived by her son Rob (June), grandson Russell (Lisa) and great-grandson Matthew; daughter-in-law Dorothy, granddaughter Sandra (Michel Provost), great-grandchildren, Antoine, Myreille, Brigette and Amy; grandson Ian (Leslie), great-grandchildren, Kyle, Scott and Laura; son-in-law Gary Cooper; grandson Brent Cooper (Sharon), great-grandchildren, Quinn and Aidan; grandson Troy Cooper (Shannon), great-grandchildren, Hailey and Presley; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Mum was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Jo-Anne McCartney; her brother Frame; her husband Benjamin, her sister Margaret Francis; son Ralph; and daughter Patricia Cooper. She was born in Portage la Prairie, youngest of three siblings to Robert and Jo-Anne McCartney on August 2, 1910. She grew up on the family farm in Longburn and lived there until her father passed away, following which she and her mother moved to MacDonald. Mum began working in MacDonald at Fisher General Store and met Dad there as he was working at the MacDonald Airport. They were married on September 28, 1940 and moved for a short period of time to Portage la Prairie. They returned to MacDonald where they farmed for a few years before returning to the family homestead at Longburn in 1949. In 1968 they retired from the farm and moved to Transcona where they resided until Dad passed away on September 28, 1972. Mum continued to live in Transcona and then North Kildonan, and earlier this year moved to Oakview Personal Care Home. In her own words, Mum had a good life and couldn't complain . She was involved in many community activities while living in the Longburn / MacDonald area. She was active in the Longburn United Church and W.M.S., taking part in quilting bees and other activities to raise money for the less fortunate. Upon moving to Winnipeg she became active in the work force and later volunteered her time at the Health Sciences Centre. Without a doubt Mum's greatest joy in life was her family and extended family. She was at her best when surrounded by her grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She made friends wherever she went and with whoever she met and loved a good visit . She will be greatly missed by all. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Oakview for the excellent care they provided to Mum over the past few months. She was only there a short time, however they were wonderful caregivers. Due to unforeseen circumstances the planned memorial service has been postponed, to a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
