CATHERINE MAY HOWLETT February 19, 1911 - December 24, 2004 Peacefully and with dignity, Catherine went to be with her Lord and Saviour on December 24, 2004. She was predeceased by her mother Sarah (nee Pollard) and father John and her brothers, Archie and Albert. She is survived by Dolly, wife of Albert; niece Virginia Wall and nephew John Howlett (Roberta) and numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews; as well as her former colleague and good friend of 60 years, Lillian McLennan. Catherine was born in Swift Current, SK and received her education at Spring School and Swift Current Collegiate. She joined the Salvation Army and served as an Officer in MacLeod, Wetaskewin, Grande Prairie and Red Deer, AB before transferring to Winnipeg to study nursing. She graduated in Nursing from Grace Hospital in 1940. She also obtained her R.T. Manitoba X-Ray Society; Fellowship of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists; and Reg. Professional Parliamentarian with the National Association of Parliamentarians. Catherine worked at the Grace Hospital Laboratory and the Winnipeg Clinic Laboratory; also at the Winnipeg General Hospital as an Instructor in Medical Lab. Technology and at Red River Community College as Department Head and Instructor in the Medical Lab. Department. She served terms as President of the Manitoba Medical Lab. Society and as President of the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg and was a Board Member at the Convalescent Home for 20 years. Catherine was also a member of the Grace Hospital Nurses Alumnae; the Maple Leaf Communicators, International Training in Communication (Toastmistress); the Keystone Parliamentary Study Group; and an active member of Westminster United Church since 1951. Catherine will be remembered by her family and friends for her love and loyalty. She led an active life right to the end, maintained a broad range of interests and was a willing volunteer and contributor. Her participation at church and the other organizations in which she was active will be particularly missed. Many thanks to the friends and paramedics who assisted Catherine and to the Emergency and Palliative staff at St. Boniface Hospital whose care and sensitivity made her passing comfortable and dignified. A service of memorial and thanksgiving for Catherine's life will be held at Westminster United Church, corner of Maryland and Westminster on Friday, January 7 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Catherine's memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 500 - 55 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3G 1L8 or to Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 1A5.   • I enjoyed having Catherine as a neighbor for over five years and still find a smile comes to me when I think of her warmth and understanding of people. I feel blessed to have had her in my life.
