Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOREEN COSTELLO July 26, 1941 - December 27, 2004 It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend Doreen Costello, at the Grace General Hospital after a lengthy illness. Doreen was predeceased by her parents, John and Mabel Costello and her brother David Costello. Doreen's memory will be cherished by longtime friends, Maurice, Sonia, Peter and Russ; Agnes and family. She will be deeply missed by Jim, Ivan and the staff at her home, the Supportive Living Residence. Doreen's treasured pastimes were doing a variety of crafts including beaded dolls, plastic canvas cross stitch, ceramics and painting. Doreen was an avid collector of Barbie dolls and cat figurines which she loved. She had two birds, Dino and Davy whom she treasured as her companions. Doreen loved her bimonthly trips with her mother and friend Anne to Grand Forks and Fargo where they shopped, went sight-seeing, and bingo. She also spent many hot and busy summers with her family and friends at Winnipeg Beach (walking the board walk and playing bingo) and Matlock. Her brother David made it possible for her lifetime wishes to come true - three special holidays. Doreen's first dream came true when in 1997 she visited Anne of Green Gables Homestead, saw the red sandy soil in Prince Edward Island, and dipped her feet in the waters of the Atlantic. It was breathtaking for her to see where the fictional Anne lived and walked. Doreen was a great fan and waited all her life to visit there. Above all, Doreen appreciated and enjoyed the friendliness of the island folks! Her next wish was to visit the land of the majestic mountains, the bountiful, beautiful parklands, the Pacific Ocean and the people in and around Victoria and Vancouver, BC. Each new day was a special adventure and an unforgettable challenge! Her final and most memorable holiday was to Walt Disney World in Florida where she met Mickey, Minnie, Cinderella, Snow White, Chip and Dale, Pocahontas and other wonderful fairy tale characters she read about and admired for years. This trip was a joy beyond words and cherished deeply. Doreen lived life to the fullest and met each of life's challenges as she struggled with diabetes, a learning disability and latterly double pneumonia. Her greatest accomplishment was to appear before a panel board and gain her freedom to make her own decisions. Although she met with adversity, she knew and cherished this precious right of every Canadian. We would like to thank all the staff at the Grace Hospital I.C.U. and 3rd floor staff for your wonderful care, kindness, understanding and above all compassion and support shown to Doreen. You make us proud! God bless each and everyone of you! Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Maranatha Evangelical Free Church, 910 Sturgeon Rd. with Doreen's Pastor, Dave Lewycky officiating. Interment will take place in the family plot at Brookside Cemetery next spring. It would be Doreen's wish that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to the recent victims of the tragedy in the border countries of the Indian Ocean through the Mennonite Central Committee Asian Earthquake Fund, 134 Plaza Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9.
