ALBERT HENRY REDEKOPP
Born: May 04, 1945
Date of Passing: Dec 30, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALBERT HENRY REDEKOPP May 4, 1945 - December 30, 2004 Husband, Father, Brother, Lawyer, Scholar, Friend Unexpectedly, on Thursday, December 30, Albert Henry Redekopp was called home to his eternal rest. He was 59. Albert is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Mary; and his cherished children, Matthew (Jeni) and Sarah (Jonathan). He is also survived by his siblings, Margaret (Bill), Will (Karyn), Ed, Art (Marilyn) and Karen (Mark). He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Sigrid. Albert was a gregarious man who had a great gift for making every person he knew feel special. His family was always his number one priority and his wife and children felt totally loved every day of his life. He was unapologetically proud of their every achievement. He was an exceptional scholar, an avid reader, and musician. He performed on the trumpet, sang in and conducted church choirs, and was recently learning to play both the saxophone and the guitar. He had a life long love of learning and never lost his curiosity to try new things. He aimed to do everything with gusto, whether it was researching a legal argument or perfecting his golf game. Albert was born in Winnipeg, May 4, 1945, and grew up in North Kildonan. A bright, inquisitive child, he grew into a brilliant idealist and thrived on deep conversations about everything from religion to business to law to literature. He was a regular visitor of the north end Salisbury House, where many of these conversations would take place. He attended the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg and then spent many years in higher education studying engineering, English, religion and law. He graduated from the University of Toronto with an honours Arts degree in English, and spoke often and with joy at having learned from both Marshall McLuhan and Northrop Frye while at the University of Toronto. He went on to graduate from the University of Manitoba law school and established his own general law practice in North Kildonan, with a special interest in business and commercial law. But Albert also spent many hours helping out those less fortunate, never turning away a client who couldn't afford to pay him and giving seminars on legal matters and wills at seniors' homes. He also had a lifelong involvement with his family business, Allmar Distributors, first as a youth, driving trucks and working the order desk sales, and later on as a shareholder. He had an active faith and expressed it with exuberance. He was a lifetime member of McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church, and more recently attended The Meeting Place. In the last year, Albert was preparing for retirement and he and Mary had bought a condo in Victoria, BC, where he began attending the Metropolitan United Church. He spent many summers enjoying Manitoba's abundant lake life, first as a counsellor and lifeguard at Camp Arnes as a teenager, and as an adult, cherished every minute he had at his cottage on Lake of the Woods. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 5, 1:00 p.m. at the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, 1315 Gateway Rd. A choir rehearsal for anyone wishing to sing at the service will be held at the church at 11:15 a.m. the same day. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Mennonite Central Committee to help victims of the earthquake in south Asia. Funeral arrangements by Friends of the Family, 222-8080.

I was a high school classmate of Alberts, from grade 7 to 12 at MBCI. Albert was our class president most or all of these years, and he was admired for all the right reasons. I had one phone conversation with him about 4 or 5 years ago when we tried to get together to talk over old times, but we never managed. I will always regret this. Mary, and family, I have many fond memories of Albert. Some people say that when people die, they leave a part of them to live on with the people that they have touched. For me that would be Albert's kind heartedness, regard for others, and compassion for his family and friends; that is what I would hold dear. I always saw him take great pride in his children, and Mary. With deep sorrow, God Bless, Pat Cunningham (Corley) Pat Cunningham - Posted by: Patricia Corley (Nee Cunningham) (Acquaintance) on: Jan 16, 2005

My sincere condolences to Albert's family on his sudden passing. Albert and I went to school together, grew up in the NK and played hockey together when we were young. I had coffee with Albert when in WInnipeg about a year ago. We talked for over an hour about the "old days" and of course discussed all the problems in the world .... Albert always had answers as well. We had a good time that day at Robins Donuts. This early life is so fragile. God Bless you all as you morn your loss. He will be missed. - Posted by: John Wiebe (Acquaintance) on: Jan 07, 2005

Dear Family of Albert, I am shocked and saddened by the news of Albert's passing. Although we had not kept up closely for many years, during our high school and university years I considered him a dear friend. Albert was always kind, considerate, friendly with a wonderful smile, and a real gentleman. My deepest sympathies to Mary and the children, and to Margaret and Ed (who was a classmate.)
