Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMICHAEL (MIKE) CHORNEY Peacefully on January 3, 2005, Mike Chorney passed away at Selkirk General Hospital just two days short of his 94th birthday. Mike leaves behind his loving wife of 66 years, Sophie. He is also survived by his siblings Joe Chorney and Stella Wasylik, several sisters- and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Mike was predeceased by his brothers, James, Anton and John; and sisters, Carrie Sternat and Mary Mikolash. Mike was born on the farm in Cromwell, MB, on January 5, 1911, to John and Nellie Chorney. Mike and Sophie were married in 1938 and, together, operated their own potato and grain farm in the East Selkirk area for over 50 years. Mike and Sophie retired to Selkirk, where Mike kept active in curling, swimming and biking. Mike had a passion for farming and a deep understanding of what work he had to do to support the growing cycle. He was always up for any challenge that came his way and wasn't afraid of any hard work that needed to be done. He would always be the first to offer help to anyone, and his family and friends are forever appreciative of this. Many have fond memories of times when Mike showed up to lend a helping hand. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, January 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, 269 Jemima St., Selkirk, with Fr. Boguslaw Wardzinski officiating. Viewing will be prior to the service. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers will be Barry Wasylik, Raymond Sternat, Harvey Chorney, Rick Hnatiuk, Larry Burbella, and Allan Drobot. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
