RUTH EVELYN SCOTT (nee HOCKIN) Peacefully on January 5, 2005 Ruth passed away after her battle with stomach cancer. She will be sadly missed by her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Janis Isbister; sister Shirley (Herb) Trent; and brother Roy (Elsie) Hockin as well as sister-in-law Vera (Elmer) Hockin. She will also be mourned by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends alike. Ruth was predeceased by her parents Heber and Freda (Lottin) Hockin; brothers, Doug and Elmer Hockin; first husband Gary Isbister; and second husband Donald Scott. Ruth was born August 12, 1933 in Neepawa, Manitoba and was raised on the family farm in Mentmore. She enjoyed life on the farm in her childhood and teenage years. The farm and her family and friends were a catalyst for all of the beautiful qualities within her. In her youth, Ruth excelled in 4H clubs and together with her friend Edith Sumner, placed first in Manitoba poultry judging and went on to capture the Dominion Championship at the Toronto Royal, being declared the best team of poultry judges of all 4H clubs across Canada. Her career began as a steno clerk for Great West Life and she was later fortunate to have an opportunity to work for Transair Airlines in the accounts payable department. There she developed friendships that she would endear for the rest of her life. As her friends would attest, her laugh and smile were infectious. Transair was soon after bought out by Pacific Western Airlines where she worked until retirement in 1991. She enjoyed her career with the airlines and had a special affection for many of the ramp rats and coworkers. On October 25, 1974 she married Donald Scott who was her true soul mate, friend and travelling companion. They enjoyed many years of touring the world together until Don's passing in 1988. Without Don, her passion for travel would never be the same. Ruth was a huge curling fan and she attended many Briers across Canada and attended the Worlds in Scotland, ever eager to cheer on our Manitoba or Canadian representatives. She was also an avid hockey fan and would always be watching a game on TV and cheering wildly. She was a great patriot and truly loved Canada, touting the maple leaf with her wherever she went. A perfect summer day for her was toiling in her garden, feeding the birds and watering her flowers. As a long term member of the Army Navy and Legion, units No. 283 and No. 4 respectively, Ruth enjoyed many a gathering and events with her friends and also helped out whenever possible with the Ladies Auxiliary. She especially loved the Saturday meat draws. As she wished, Ruth was able to stay in the home she loved until her passing with the assistance of the Palliative Care program. Her home life was assisted by visits from her loving case nurse Mariette as well as the other nurses, all of whom we were blessed to have been touched by. We express our gratitude to the St. Boniface Palliative Care unit and the loving care you provided for our Ruth. A memorial service and celebration of Ruth's life will be held on Tuesday, January 11 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. An interment will follow for her final resting place in Neepawa at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choosing or to Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3J OL3. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My family met Ruth and Don when they visited the UK. We still talk about their visit and what a pleasure it was to meet them. My Mom (Marjorie) kept in contact with Ruth until her death in 2003. I have only just found this website. I would have recorded a message a lot earlier if I had known. - Posted by: Pam Stone (maiden name Hockin) (Distant cousin) on: Jul 17, 2014

  • Our thoughts are with all of Ruth's family at this sad time. She was a long time friend of us both. Helen and Ruth roomed together when they came to Winnipeg from Neepawa back in the fifties. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her. Everyone who knew her will remember and share many fond memories of her life. Long live the memories. - Posted by: Helen & John Steel (Friend) on: Jan 09, 2005
