MARVIN HENRY FRANCIS Peacefully, after a lengthy battle with cancer, Marvin Francis passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at the age of 49 years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his life partner Cindy Singer; daughter Samahra; sister Dorothy Vick (Brian); brothers, Robert and Peter of Edmonton and John of Ottawa; nieces, Michelle and Dallas; nephews, Darren and David; and cousin Georgina. Originally from Northern Alberta, Marvin was a member of the Heart Lake First Nation but grew to call Winnipeg home. Marvin was a poet, playwright, painter and most recently printmaker. He was an active and founding member of the Aboriginal Writers Collective of Winnipeg, longtime board member of Urban Shaman Gallery and board member of The Manitoba Writers Guild. A celebration of Marvin's life will be held on Wednesday, January 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Urban Shaman Art Gallery, 233 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB. 942-2674. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marvin's memory may be made to the Andrew Street Family Centre, CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of one's choice. He will be greatly missed.
