Date of Passing: Dec 26, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHAROLD WILFRED WAKEMAN Harold Wilfred Wakeman of Transcona passed away peacefully at River East Personal Care Home on December 26, 2004, in the presence of family members. Harold was 93 years of age, lived a life full of helping others and was well liked by all who knew him! He was a quiet, generous and gentle man with the warmest smile and a big heart. Harold was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 67 years, Eleanor, who passed away exactly one year ago. He was predeceased by his sister Gladys; and brother George. He is lovingly remembered by Bob and Sharon, Bill, Fred and Brenda, Peggy; seven grandchildren, Scott and Brett, Chris, Wendy and Curtis, Whitney and Wesley; and two great-grandsons, Jarod and Evan. He was dearly loved by the Wakeman, Uhrich, Luney, Stady and Scott families and friends. In his 20s, Dad held both private and commercial pilot's licences. He often landed in the fields of West Transcona and took friends for joy rides in his biplane. Following an apprenticeship as a machinist with Canadian National Railways and positions with Pritchard Engineering and other engineering firms, he joined TCA's machine shop (now Air Canada) in August 1938. He was an avid curler, bowler, swimmer, weightlifter and golfer with the Transcona Curling Club, Transcona Bowl 5-pin League, CN Recreation Club and the Transcona Golf and Country Club. Dad was always working on cars and bikes - his own and others. With three sons who shared his interest in cars, and had their own vehicles in various states of repair, the Wakeman back yard often looked like a used car repair shop. In the late 50s, Dad got into the TV repair business which continued well after he retired from Air Canada in 1969. He was in high demand due in part to low fees, but more so, the friendly, personable and empathetic way he treated his customers. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the kind and caring staff at the River East Personal Care Home, especially those in Unit No. 1. You brought dignity, respect, comfort and love to a gentleman in his last few years! You were always there for Dad when he needed you. We felt confident entrusting him to your care. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service and reception at Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Ave. W., on Saturday, January 15, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
