JOHN IRVINE GLANVILLE John Irvine Glanville died peacefully on January 9, 2005 following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. John was predeceased by his loving wife Lachlena (Lee); and will be dearly missed by his sister Elizabeth; and his children, Beth (Ian Lange), Patricia (Jurgen Hartloper) and Jack. John was born April 29, 1932 in India to missionary parents, John and Joan Glanville who predeceased him. His academic career began in Belfast, Ireland where he completed a Masters degree in Civil Engineering at Queens University. Shortly after, John immigrated to Canada where he met and married Lee, with whom shared a unique relationship filled with love and humour. John held a professorial appointment at the University of Manitoba. His teaching career extended to the University of Cantebury, New Zealand and to Khon Kaen Thailand where he had a great impact in helping start the Civil Engineering program and where he made many loyal friends. As a result of his experience in teaching John was selected to be the first Director of the ENGAP Program. During his tenure he received numerous commendations and awards for education and research. John also co-authored a number of authoritative masonry engineering textbooks. John remained past his official retirement to continue teaching. Having an innate empathetic nature, he felt his most important contribution to engineering was through his personal and professional commitment to helping his students and colleagues. With his wicked sense of humour and his instant response to Lets go! Grandad , whatever the outing, John will be sadly missed by Nicola, Jamie, Joshua, Colin, Alexander, Johnny and Andrew. A memorial service honouring Johns' life and career will be held at the Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd. on Thursday, January 27 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or their favourite charity. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I am very sorry to hear that the best professor I ever had has passed away. After graduation I enjoyed visiting with "Granny" whenever I had the chance to return to Winnipeg. Talented people like John Glanville are truly rare and I will miss him. - Posted by: Stephen Crispin (Friend) on: Jan 28, 2005

  • Thank you John. You helped me in my career as an engineering student. You also taught me how to sail, something that I have loved my whole life. You will be missed. - Posted by: Will Gibson (Acquaintance) on: Jan 25, 2005

  • John was recognized by the Class of 82 as one of the outstanding professors in Civil Engineering at the U of M. "Granny" as our class affectionately called him truly cared about his students, taking time to talk about anything from reinforced concrete to motorcycles. The profession has lost a great advocate, and we have lost a good friend. Reed Winstone, BSc CE 82, P.Eng. - Posted by: Reed Winstone (Friend) on: Jan 24, 2005
