JAN (JOHN) VISSER Peacefully, on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, Jan, beloved husband of Tina, passed away to be with his Lord, at the Concordia Hospital at the age of 86 years. Jan was born October 24, 1918, in Nes, Friesland, The Netherlands, to Jan and Anna Visser (Venema). He came to Canada in 1948, working for the Dutch Government as an agricultural advisor to help Dutch immigrants settle in Canada. He decided to settle in Canada, and his family joined him six months later in Winnipeg. He later moved to Thunder Bay and worked for Canada Iron Foundries for five years. This lead to a distinguished career with Griffin Steel Foundries for 24 years, both in Transcona and Chicago until retirement. Jan and his wife Tina enjoyed a long, healthy retirement, taking many trips by motor-home throughout the U.S. and traveling between Winnipeg and Chicago to visit children and grandchildren. Jan is survived by his loving wife Tina (Vander Bij) of 58 years; his eight children, John (Frieda), Winnipeg, Teena, Hamilton, Annie Venema, Leo (Carla), Thea (Sandy) Siepman, all of Winnipeg and George (Gail), Harold (Marge) and Peter (Bev) of Chicago; 32 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Jan is also survived by his brother Ted (Tjeerd) (Martha) in Hamilton; and numerous relatives in Thunder Bay and in the Netherlands. Jan was predeceased by his first wife Anna (Dykstra) in 1945. Jan was a faithful member of the Christian Reformed Church his whole life, serving several terms as an elder. For the past two years he was a member of the Providence Reformed Church. There will be a memorial service at Covenant CRC, 653 Knowles Ave., at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 24 officiated by Rev. Dan Donovan. There will be a private interment prior to the memorial service. Flowers gratefully declined - donations can be sent to the Union Gospel Mission. For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
