Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES GORDON HAMILTON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Hamilton, on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 54 years. James Gordon Hamilton, loving father of Lesley, Nancy and Drew; dear son of Doreen (Donnelly) Hamilton and the late Jack Hamilton; dear brother of Greg (Jane), John (Sandy), Carol-Anne Halstead (Don) and Lourdes Kelly (Larry); devoted uncle of Katie, Jenny, Chris, Mike, Shawn, Sarah, Shannon, Mark and Meaghan; lovingly remembered by former wife and friend Andrea Hamilton; as well, Jim will be sadly missed by the Pollock family, Rose and Andy, John, Mickey and Susan; and his niece and nephew, Kimberley and Kyle. Jim was born in Grand Mere, QUE. on June 17, 1950. The Hamilton family later settled in Ottawa where Jim attended St. Daniel's School and Laurentian High School. He was an accomplished athlete as a player on community baseball and hockey teams. Jim was a defensive halfback on the highly successful Laurentian Senior Football Team. Downhill skiing was yet another sport that he was skilled in. After graduation, Jim went on to complete a Bachelor of Physical Education Degree at Laurentian University in Sudbury, ON. His travels then took him to Winnipeg, where he attended the University of Manitoba, completing his Teaching Certificate, and beginning his long and outstanding teaching career. From 1974 until 1981, Jim taught Physical Education at Grant Park High School. He was a dedicated teacher and basketball coach, who touched the lives of teachers and students alike with his sense of humour and sheer joy in being a part of the school community. In 1981, Jim moved to Churchill High School where he taught in the Learning Assistance Centre Program, working with students in an alternative classroom setting. Jim, along with a number of very talented teaching assistants, ran a highly successful program until his health was such that he was no longer able to work. Jim had many interests outside of school as well. He was an avid golfer and pool player, never passing on an opportunity to challenge friends and relatives to a friendly, spirited game. Jim loved to follow professional sports and was an enthusiastic, informed fan of hockey, baseball, football, basketball, and golf. His talents carried over to the kitchen, where he was an accomplished cook, taking particular pride in his Sunday roast beef dinners and Sushi creations. His three children, Lesley, Nancy and Drew were Jim's pride and joy. He supported them wholeheartedly in every aspect of their lives and taught them to live life with humour and optimism. Jim will be sadly missed and always remembered by his family, his friends, and all who knew him. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd. with Rev. Fr. Barry Schoonbaert presiding. Special thanks for the care and support provided by the staff of Health Sciences Centre over the past six weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 400 - 141 Bannatyne Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0R3. I am very saddened to hear of Jim’s passing he will be missed by everyone that he ever met and when you met Jim you had a life long friend. I played for Jim in my freshman year at GP and I knew right away that he was a very special person who you could learn more than just how to play basketball from. I wish that I had heard about the memorial service sooner as I would have waited through the coldest day to say thank you to a man that made such a huge difference in my life. - Posted by: Tom King (Friend) on: Jan 24, 2005
