MARY ETTA DAY (nee THOMPSON) 1921 - 2005 Peacefully on January 24, 2005, our loving mother and grandmother passed away at the St. Boniface General Hospital at the age of 83. Mom will be sadly missed by her loving son James (Shirley); daughter Betty (Gerry); grandchildren, Scott, Darren (Rebecca), Michelle (Michael), Rodney (Angie), Kim and Kevin; as well as her siblings, Ethel, Frank, Pearl; and numerous other relatives. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband Alastair Frances in 1972; parents, Alfred and Lillian Thompson of Bagot, MB; and her siblings, Edith, Florence, George and Russel. Mom was born on February 3, 1921 in Bagot where she attended Image Hill School from 1926 to 1934, actively participating in softball and ice skating. During the Second World War, she drove taxi in Portage la Prairie and drove Motor Transport for the Air Observer School Southport. She went through Selective Service in St. Catharines, ON working in a war factory and also driving bus for Niagara, St. Catharines and Toronto railways until the end of the war. Mom returned to Winnipeg in 1946 where she began work with Eaton's department store and met her future husband Alastair. The next year, they were married and returned to Portage la Prairie where they resided until returning to Winnipeg in 1959, settling in Transcona. Mom would best be remembered for starting the Transcona Driving School in 1964, which she continued to operate until her retirement in 1984. Mary also enjoyed her time gardening and dancing. The family would like to thank Dr. John Foerster, Dr. Dennis Caners and the nurses of the St. Boniface General Hospital and Park Manor for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Mary Etta Day to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or a charity of one's choice. In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held with interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
