BARBARA JOAN MARQUAND March 20, 1922 - January 25, 2005 A long journey together ended for Barbara and Ray with the peaceful passing of Barbara at Fort Garry Care Centre after a lengthy and wearying battle against Alzheimer's disease. We wish to thank the staff at the centre for their loving and unceasing care and understanding during her residence there. Born in Seaford, Sussex, England, Barbara completed her training and began her nursing career at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for sick children in London, during the blitz. She married Ray in 1942 and followed him to Moosejaw Canada after his release from a German prisoner of war camp. John Philip, their first child was born in Brighton England in 1943 and they joined Ray in Moosejaw where Rosemary was born in 1946. After settling in Winnipeg the same year, Barbara pursued her abiding interest in childcare through her work at the Children's Hospital, St. Boniface Hospital, the Crippled Children's Society and various other institutions involved in child welfare. She eventually became program director in the special needs family day care program at the family services of Winnipeg, retiring in 1983. Her enduring patience and concern for children's welfare over the years earned her the respect and admiration of all her colleagues. She introduced a variety of programs that benefit children even to this day. She is survived by her husband Ray; John and wife Sala, Rosemary and husband Bernard; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her sister Lesley and brother Keith. A special thanks to our very dear friend Penny for her help and loving concern during this difficult time. Do not go gentle into that good night, Rage, rage against the dying of the light! -Poet Dylan Thomas Au revoir sweet lady...
