BYRON MELVIN GIBBS February 13, 1926 - January 28, 2005 After a lengthy illness Mel passed away on Friday, January 28 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine; his daughter Judie of Denver, Colorado; his son Jamie (Susan) of Dallas, Texas; and grandchildren, Lauren (Matthew), Joanna, Gillian, Jamie and David; nephew Ron Sparks, and niece Darlene Bates. He was predeceased by his sister Elva MacKenzie. Mel attended Gordon Bell High School, United College, and the University of Winnipeg prior to military service. During his many years in the jewelry industry Mel enjoyed working with his good friends in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and northwestern Ontario. Throughout his career he was an active member of the Northwest Commercial Traveller's Association. Mel was a member of the Manitoba Jewellers Association and retired from the industry in 1989. He was a former member of the Deer Lodge Curling Club, Winnipeg Winter Club, Niakwa Country Club, and the St. Charles Country Club. Mel was a member of Khartum Temple, the Director's Staff, and the Royal Order of Jesters. Further to Mel's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a private family service. Should friends wish, a donation to the Manitoba Lung Association or a charity of their choice would be appreciated. A special thank you to the Respiratory Home Care team and the Palliative Care Unit at the St. Boniface General Hospital, and to Dr. L.A. Homik for his care and kindness during Mel's lengthy illness.
