KATHERIEN MAY BAKER (nee SAWICH) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katherien May Baker on January 28, 2005 at Grace General Hospital. Kathy was predeceased by her husband George Baker on October 12, 1988; her father Bruce Sawich; brothers, Walter, George, and John Sawich; sisters, Mildred (in infancy) and Marie Balash; brother-in-law Al Kirsch; nephews, Keith Kirsch and Brent Sawich; and nieces, Judy Kirsch and Tammy Sawich. Kathy was also predeceased by her special friend Roy Willey. Kathy leaves behind a loving family who will miss her very much. She is survived by her mother Emma Sawich; only son Ken Sawich (Shelley); and her three grandchildren, Aaron, Lauren, and Shauna Sawich. Kathy is also survived by her brothers, Bill (Carol), David (Pat), Michael (Christina); and sister Annie; her sisters-in-law, Helen, Isabel and Marilyn; and brother-in-law Arnold Balash and many nieces and nephews. Kathy was born on February 28, 1933 in Greencourt, AB. She was the eldest of 10 siblings. While growing up on the farm she had a passion and love for animals which she carried on throughout her joyful life. Kathy moved to Winnipeg in 1950 at the age of 17. She married George Baker, the love of her life, on April 4, 1953. After growing up on the farm in Alberta, Mom lived in downtown Winnipeg and St. James. She worked for approximately 20 years at Standard Garment Industries as a seamstress and eventually retired from Eaton's, where she had worked for several years. Kathy was also an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion (No. 4) where she enjoyed dancing and playing bingo. She eventually moved into the Manitoba Housing Co-op where both she and her mother Emma resided. Kathy enjoyed this part of her life, especially spending time with her mother, who she was able to see every day. Kathy and Emma were very close and truly enjoyed the time they spent together. Kathy had always been close to her mother and attended to all of her needs. Emma will always treasure the memories she has of her daughter. Kathy had numerous friends at the co-op where they would share quality time in dining and playing bingo and cards. Kathy will be fondly remembered by all those who knew her for her jovial personality and excellent sense of humour. Kathy could make anyone laugh in just about every situation and it was a pleasure to spend time with her. She spent quiet time listening to music and doing puzzles and crosswords. My fond memories of Mom are of the outings we used to have when I was a child. Some of these include quaint train rides to Winnipeg Beach on the weekends and picnics at the legislative grounds with my Mom and Dad. On Sundays we would take a bus to Assiniboine Park from downtown on Furby Street. After enjoying a day in the park, we would have an adventurous walk home to enjoy mom's delicious home-cooked dinner, which was usually roast beef and lemon pie. Mom was very proud of her grandchildren Aaron, Lauren and Shauna, who she loved very much. They have many treasured memories of her, especially birthday and Christmas celebrations through the years. Mom, you left too soon and your smile, laughter, and very caring ways will be etched in our hearts forever. We will all miss you. The family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, the Grace Hospital ICU and 3rd floor west staff for their compassion and special care. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc. at 984 Portage Ave. (entrance on Aubrey Street), viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Gislason, Stephen Gislason, Larry Gislason, Dennis Gislason, Greg Gislason, and Paul Gislason. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
