WALTER (WALLY) CARDINAL
Date of Passing: Feb 06, 2005
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER (WALLY) CARDINAL It is with great sadness and sorrow that the family announces the passing of their beloved father, grandfather and brother Walter (Wally) Cardinal on Sunday, February 6, 2005 at St. Joseph's Residence, surrounded by his four children and his sister. Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife Elizabeth (Liz) on August 30, 2000 - a loss he never got over; his mother Eva (1999); father William (1972); brother-in-law Bill Zelen-ko (1979); nephew Barry Zelen-ko (1972) and niece Marlene Zelen-ko (1962). He is survived by his children Lynda (Len Buchko), Rick (Charlene), Laurie (Trevor Huggins), and Donna-Lee (Bill Steen); eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Jillana and Julee Buchko, Madison and Mackenzie Cardinal, Tyson and Tonya Cardinal, and Emma Steen; his dearly devoted sister Mary Zelen-ko; brother-in-law John (Roberta) Poturnak; sisters-in-law, Carole Poturnak (Marcel Bilodeau), and Dianne Poturnak; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Walter was born on June 14, 1935 and lived all of his life in the North End (which he loved). He was an Electrician by trade, employed by the C.N.R. for 35 years, retiring in 1993. In his spare time he was very involved in the North End community and a member of Legion #141. He was instrumental and one of the founding fathers of the North Winnipeg Junior B Satellites, and the MNS Stars hockey teams; and he was one of the first to coach a little known sport of Ringette here in the mid 1970's. He enjoyed bowling on a 10 pin league for many years, and golfing with his buddies. He was always active in any sports that his four children were in - he was their coach, their advisor and their greatest cheerleader. In later years this extended to his grandchildren in their sports of hockey, bowling and soccer - he loved to watch a good game and always offered his coaching expertise. The family would like to thank Dr. Babick and the wonderful caring staff at St. Joseph's Residence, especially on the 2nd floor, where dad was a resident for the past year, and who treated our dad with great compassion, dignity and respect - you are truly special people. Funeral service will be held on Friday, February 11 at 9:30 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Rev. Fr. Peter Chorney officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Len Buchko, Trevor Huggins, Bill Steen, Tyson Cardinal, Billy Halabiski and Peter Kebalo. All of dad's buddies are to consider themselves Honorary Pallbearers. Flowers gratefully declined, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Wally's memory to a charity of one's choice. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

We now live in B.C. but were saddened to read of Wally's passing when we accessed the Winnipeg Free Press. He was a very nice person and always willing to help with hockey and other sporting events in North Winnipeg. Our deepest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Barry & Irene Swanton (Friend) on: Feb 09, 2005
