ALAN GRANT HOWISON On Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at the Grace Hospital, Alan Grant Howison died of heart failure. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Molly; as well as by his brother Jimmy. He is survived by his wife and best friend of close to 50 years, Nancy, and by his three children and their families: Tricia and Neil Robertson and Nan; Jamie Howison and Catherine Pate and Jessica, Margaret and Callaway; Bruce and Valerie Howison and Jonathan, Jennifer and Heather. Alan was born in London, England on June 9, 1932. He was educated in Scotland and following military service with the Black Watch, emigrated to Canada in 1953. In 1955 he married Nancy Smith and with the exception of a one year period following their wedding, they made Winnipeg their home. Highly respected in the business and investment communities, he often said of his time as Executive Director of the Winnipeg Foundation (1976 - 1989), that he had the greatest job in the world. A person of deep Christian faith, Alan was committed to the church's ministry, both in the local congregation and at the broader level, serving variously on the boards of his home church, Young Life of Canada (1972 - 1979), Young Life International (1973 - 1977), and Providence College (1977 - 1985, 1992 - 2000). He was also active in the life of his city, serving as a Sinking Fund Trustee of the City of Winnipeg (1977 - 2002) and the Winnipeg School Division (1976 - 1985), as a member of the Advisory Board of Marymound Inc. (1993 - 2005), among other involvements. A fine golfer, his chief joy in the game came from the friendships formed on the links. He served in various capacities at the St. Charles Country Club, most recently playing a key role in the club's history. A celebration of Alan's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 14 at Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Dr., the Rev. Ian Shaw of Westwood Presbyterian Church presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Winnipeg Foundation or Providence College. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
