BERNARD O'KELLY of Arlington Heights Visitation for Bernard O'Kelly, 78, will be held Saturday, February 12 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, 440 S. Mitchell, Arlington Heights. Burial at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery will be private. Born August 10, 1926 in Winnipeg, MB Canada, he died Wednesday, February 9 peacefully at home. Bernard earned a M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Harvard University and was a Professor of English and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Dakota for 29 years. He was for many years a member and leader of national organizations of academic deans, arts and sciences colleges and humanities groups. He was instrumental in establishing the North Dakota Humanities Council. He retired in 1995 after a 45-year academic career. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Marcia (nee Levin); children, Liz (Tom Kivlahan) O'Kelly of Arlington Heights and Peter (Kerry) O'Kelly of Andover, MA; grandchildren, Erin, Stephen, Katherine and Chris; brother-in-law David Peterkin and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bartholomew and Cora (nee Beadle) O'Kelly; son Christopher and his sisters, Patricia McCormick and Audrey Peterkin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the University of North Dakota Arts and Sciences Endowment, PO Box 8157, Grand Forks, ND 58202 would be appreciated.
