CHERYL RAE MARCHANT (nee OAKE) Lovingly Remembered Dearly loved mother, daughter, sister, cousin, aunt and friend, Cheryl Marchant passed away on Friday, February 11, 2005, at the Grace General Hospital at the age of 60 years. She leaves to cherish her memory, her mother Edna; children, Sharon Schellenberg (Lonny), Derek (Ligia Raposo), Bonnie (Brett Donald); sister Valerie Melville (Barry); brothers, Lew and Garth; five grandchildren, Courtney, Brayden, Tailor, Kamryn and Jadyn; companion Bob Upcott; nieces, Carrie, Jennie, Lisa; nephew Brian; dear cousins; and numerous relatives and many dear friends. Cheryl was predeceased by her brother Gordon (1943); and father Stewart (1987). Cheryl was born on October 1, 1944, at the original Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Her family home was in Crescentwood, where she attended school at Rockwood, River Heights and Grant Park. The education she received at Success Business College gave her the expertise to find employment at Eaton's, Co-op Implements and for the last 18 years at Investors Group. Cheryl, a devoted mother to Sharon, Derek and Bonnie, resided in Transcona for 24 years, while raising her family with their father, Nelson. Her family was the pride and joy of her life and she devoted her time to the all the activities of a young family. The last nine years of her life Cheryl resided in St. Andrews. She was a delightful person, having a zest for life - a joie de vivre . Cheryl had an enthusiasm that was contagious to those around her and she believed in living her life with a glass half full attitude. Her loving and generous spirit always had her concerned with the needs of others, always trying to find some small act of kindness that would bring a little bit of joy into the lives of those that she loved. Words cannot express how much we will miss her smile, her laughter, her warmth and her caring. Cheryl had many pastimes, but she was most recognized for her green thumb . She loved her gardens and spent many wonderful hours tending to her flowers. Cheryl was unable to drive by a greenhouse without stopping to check out the flowers. More often than not, she would purchase the sickliest plants to take home to nurture, all of which inevitably ended up in a beautiful healthy display. She loved her summers at the family cottage at Grand Beach with many wonderful and happy times spent on the beach and with family and friends. The reward for growing old - is grandchildren. Her greatest happiness in the past 13 years was her relationship with her beloved grandchildren. Many wonderful hours were spent watching soccer, attending children's theatre, reading children's books, and playing card games. Life became a challenge six months ago when Cheryl was diagnosed with lung cancer. The courage and the strength of character that she exhibited at this most difficult time was a testimonial to what a special person she really was. A Celebration of Cheryl's Life will be held on Thursday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Conservatory in Assiniboine Park. Cheryl and her family are grateful to all the friends who were so supportive at this difficult time. Our family would also like to extend their gratitude for the caring and compassion given by the Grace Hospital emergency nurses, doctors and to Major G. Jarvis (chaplain). Missing you always... Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I attended School with Cheryl.Years later we met at the Saints Roller Rink. It was great talking to her after so many years. I'm sorry we didn't stay in touch. She was always so friendly. Please give her children and grandchildren a big Hug, as it is an important part of life, that Mothers always remember, and it makes them feel so good. I know this as I am a Mother, and a Grandmother, who has lost 2 daughters, and I miss their hugs so much. Live is so short, for so many..Enjoy it. - Posted by: Judith Walton (Doran) (Friend) on: Feb 20, 2005

  • We all lost a very special person and I personally lost a very good friend. I was very privileged to meet Cheryl,.She was very giving, caring and loving! I was a newcomer in Canada and she took me under her wing. She invited us to the family cottage where we spent time together- We worked together for 9years and every day I discovered something new and exciting in Cheryl. Some people come into our life and go away without any impact. Some people impact our life profoundly. Cheryl enriched my life and she will stay with me forever! - Posted by: Irina Teperman (Friend) on: Feb 18, 2005

  • Cheryl and I met at Grand Beach when we were six years old. I considered her one of my best friends. We spent many wonderful Summers at Grand Beach. I will always cherish the memories. Our last conversation was at Christmas when she told me she was ill. I wanted to talk about her health and all she wanted to hear about was my little dogs. Cheryl was a good person - I will miss her greatly. I doubt she ever told anyone I taught her to drive - what an experience. I can picture it all now. - Posted by: Laurie Luckett (Nicolson) & Eileen Rawlings (Mom) (Friend) on: Feb 16, 2005

  • Cheryl and I had many conversations about our children and our grandchildren. I miss our talks and Cheryl's stories about taking the grandchildren to the Forks on a Saturday and the plays she took them to see. I miss Cheryl's laugh and her smile. Cheryl is a wonderful person. - Posted by: Doreen Southgate (Co-Worker) on: Feb 15, 2005
