DR. LAJOS KOVACS (Louis), passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Residence, on February 11, 2005, at the age of 98. He was predeceased by his wife Helen Bartha, and is survived by his three loving daughters and their families, Helen Szablya of Seattle (married to John), Mary Szechy (married to Dennis) and Elizabeth Nemethy (married to Balazs), of Toronto. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren and by his extended family especially Mrs. Susan Kovac and her family. Dr. Kovacs was born in Cegled, Hungary, obtained his university education and M.D. in Budapest. He later became the head of Molnar and Moser, the largest cosmetic store chain in Hungary, and was a leading figure in the business community of pre-Second World War Hungary. Following the Second World War he escaped persecution by the communist regime and immigrated to Canada where he made his home in Winnipeg in 1951. After getting his medical degree accepted in Manitoba, he practiced as a family doctor and also as an anaesthetist at Misericordia General Hospital. He impacted the lives of many people as a physician as well as a generous and loving person and was well known in his community. Many thanks to Dr. Babick and to the staff of St. Joseph's Residence, his friends and former patients who visited him faithfully. His spirit lives on in us all and we wish him love and blessings on his journey. A prayer service will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg on Friday, February 18, at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 373 Burnell St., Winnipeg on Saturday, February 19, at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, Osborne Street. Following interment a reception will be held at the hall of St. Anthony of Padua Church. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Louis' memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
