Joe was born April 11, 1921, in Winnipeg, MB. He spent his career as a high school teacher in the Winnipeg School Division No. 1. After taking his teachers' training, Joe accepted his first teaching job in St. Martin, MB, where he worked from 1940 to 1942. During the Second World War Joe enlisted in the army and served overseas. Upon his return from the services he obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Manitoba. He then resumed his teaching career first at Isaac Newton School then moving onto Andrew Mynarski where he taught mathematics and science at the junior high level for seven years. In 1962 he moved to Daniel McIntyre Collegiate where he continued to teach maths and science. In 1958 Joe married Ruth Brownbridge who was also from the Elmwood area and a teacher as well. It was the beginning of a long and fulfilling life together which included travels overseas and excursions across Canada and into the U.S. in their trailer. As time went on Joe and Ruth became cottage owners in Boundary Park at Winnipeg Beach where they spent their entire summers. They loved the Winnipeg Beach area very much where they socialized and entertained many friends and family. Later in retirement years they took up year-long residence in Matlock which they thoroughly enjoyed until the passing of Ruth in July of 2002. Joe enjoyed the many years of fellowship offered by his friends in the Sutol Investment club. He was also a member of the St. Joseph's Club and Mentors. After retiring Joe developed a passion for magic. He always worked hard at finding new magic tricks and practising them to perform for various charitable groups. He was an active member of the Magic Circle 7 and IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians). Joe loved to be around people. He had a great sense of humour and an infectious smile which endeared him to both young and old. Joe will be greatly missed by his sisters, Mary Mozel and Nellie Hanel; nephews, Gordon Mozell (Donna) and Tom Hanel (Jennifer); great-nephews, Chris Mozell, Devon Hanel and Kurt Hanel, Eleanor and Norman Thomas; and many other relatives and friends. Besides his wife, Joe was predeceased by his brother Bill in 1988; nephew Jeff Hanel in 1986, and nephew Jack Mozell in 1966.
