NELLIE WALENSKI It is with great sadness and sorrow that the family of Nellie Walenski announces the passing of their beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, at the age of 89, on Sunday, February 20, 2005 at the Victoria General Hospital. Born in Winnipeg in 1915, Mom spent her entire life in the city. She was a busy working woman, working for many years with her sister-in-law Pat, at Peerless Garments as a seamstress. She later went to work on the 5th Floor at Eaton's in the Children's Wear Department. It was here, she provided hundreds of Brownie and Girl Guide uniforms for young girls. Mom was very active and especially enjoyed the time she spent bowling at Mosienko's Bowling Alley and St. Vital Bowl. She was an enthusiastic cook who always ensured her family had plenty of home cooking and frequently called her grandsons to come pick up a dinner for their families as well as her brother John. She loved gardening and always had a beautiful garden to tend. As a sports enthusiast you could always count on Mom to have watched the latest games, whether it was hockey, baseball, football or curling. She also spent countless hours in hockey arenas watching first her grandsons then her great-grandchildren play. In her later years, Mom always looked forward to her Saturdays with her daughter Gloria, when the two would spend the afternoon shopping and then enjoy dinner, sometimes as Joey's Only Seafood. She had a great love of dogs and her last pet Scruffy was a constant companion. Mom will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Gloria Keats (Al Jefferson); brother John Petrow; son-in-law Gary Keats; sister-in-law Pat Petrow; grandsons, Brad (Shelley) and Darrin (Kimberly); great-grandchildren, Dylan, Katie, Ryan and Kelsey; and nephew Rick Petrow. She was predeceased by her husband Joe in 1977; her mother and father, Mary and Nick Petrow; brothers, Ed and Stan; sister-in-law Mary; and nephew Kevin Petrow. The family would like to extend a special thanks to caring friends, Linda and Jack Toews for all they did for Grandma, their kindness will always be remembered. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., with interment in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Donations can be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Foundation or the Winnipeg Human Society.
