ARTHUR EDWARD CREAK On Thursday, February 24, 2005, Arthur died at the Deer Lodge Centre, at the age of 90 years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife Edna whom he married in 1952, as well as his brother Leal (British Columbia); sisters, Katheryn Levine (Florida), Hilda Nicol (British Columbia) and May Murray (ME), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur W. and Nellie M. Creak; sisters, Jessie St. Pierre, Doris Lindsay, Marjorie Laurie and Marion Jones; brothers, Ernest Creak and Ted Creak. Arthur was born March 30, 1914 in St. James Assiniboia and lived in Murray Park until he joined the Army in 1939. He served with Canadian Light Infantry at Tofino, BC and in Victoria and Vancouver doing surveillance work and went to Aldershot, England with C.A.O. where he remained until the clean-up was completed after the war. Upon his return, Art worked for Eaton's in dispatch until his retirement and then at Assiniboine Hotel. From the time he was five he had his own garden and worked in many other ones including the allotments and Victory Gardens in Epsom, U.K. and latterly on Ness Avenue always sharing his vast knowledge of growing things with scores of people. He received many prizes at the St. James Horticultural Fair and gave away his seeds and produce to everyone even though it meant having many others soon competing with him for the onion and yellow tomato prizes he'd been winning. Art spent many summers camping and picking berries and catching fish. For many years he kept bees and sold honey. Later he made lots of good wine. He was observant of all around him and Art was often the centre of activities giving a helping hand, pointing out how to fix something or tinkering with articles to make them better. Kids followed him around whether at the old farm or in the Whiteshell or along Bourkevale Park paths. He always had many things to point out and share with them and many people knew he'd be out by the old mail order building with something to share at lunch times. Special thanks to T3 Deer Lodge Centre for their love and care this past year. Art's funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at 1:30 p.m. in Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Ave. (corner of Mount Royal Road and Ness Avenue). Interment to follow in Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Art's memory to a charity of your choice.
