DOROTHEA ELIZABETH MARY NOEL SCHNELL (nee NEUERT) On February 25, 2005 at the Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Dorothea (Dot) Schnell passed away following her long term suffering of a debilitating disease, Alzheimer's, due to an unrelated illness during her final 12 days at the age of nearly 83 years. Dorothea was predeceased by her beloved husband, Daniel Leopold Schnell of more than 56 years married on this earth just three years and five days earlier. Left to forever cherish both their memories now are their sons, Donald (Betty) of Brandon, Douglas (Judy) of Winnipeg, and Mic (Cliff Savage) of Komarno; as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothea was predeceased by her parents, George Frank and Catherine Graham (nee McKay) Neuert in 1958 and 1983, respectively; and is survived by her only sibling, Margaret Black, of Winnipeg. Dorothea was born on February 27, 1922 in Portage la Prairie, MB, and continued to live there until she found her life's calling and both trained and graduated first as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Winnipeg in 1941 and then with a Diploma in Mental Nursing in Portage la Prairie in 1944. Dorothea had begun her lifelong work in nursing with the courage in the will to go on nursing the sick, the long vigils through the night watches, the sight of pain wracked bodies always with the courage needed, to bring about reforms to keep up the morale of this great country, and to be an example to others carrying burdens and responsibilities. All this and more Dorothea did always with the utmost of courage, dignity, pride and most of all, with her endless love for all and ability to always care. In 1941, Dorothea graduated from the St. Boniface Sanatorium and in 1944 from the Manitoba School. Dorothea excelled in her every endeavour and completed her training in Portage la Prairie within two years rather than the standard three years at that time. Dorothea also received an award for the highest standing amongst the six nurses who graduated at the Manitoba School Convocation. Dorothea met her forevermore and always beloved husband, Daniel, in Portage la Prairie at an Armed Forces dance one Saturday evening in Portage at the old City Hall in 1942 where they fell into blissful and endless love. They had great joy together during their time on this earth and will now continue to do so together again at last in the most Holy place, Heaven. Dorothea and Daniel always were from their beginning together, most certainly remained so during these past few years of physical separation, and are again and will now always be two halves of the same whole, as meant to be. In this alone their loved ones and friends should always take comfort. Visitation is planned for Thursday, March 3 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Funeral service will be held Friday, March 4 at 12:30 p.m., same location. Public viewing in the chapel will be from 11:30 a.m. until the service. Interment and reception to follow service. In lieu of flowers, should family or friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9, and/or Riverview Health Centre (staff and residents of 2West), 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715 Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca
