DONALD RIVAIS After a courageous battle with cancer, Donald Rivais passed away on March 3, 2005, at the Beausejour Hospital. Don is survived by his loving wife Val; his three children, Don (Leanne), Marine Pare (Doug), Teresa Logozar (Steve); his two stepsons, Scott (Kara) and Chris (Michelle) Street; his two sisters, Adrienne Stephen of B.C. and Karyn Encontre (Gerry) of Winnipeg; six half sisters from Ontario; his mother and father-in-law, Ron and Eileen Varnes of Winnipeg Beach; his brother-in-law Rick (Tammy) Varnes; his 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his mother Audrey Wolfman; and his father Ernie Rivais. Don was a long time resident of Transcona and was instrumental in the organization and maintenance of the little league there. He was proud to be an employee of Canada Post from which he retired in December of 1995 after almost 30 years. Don was very involved in the formation of the Canadian Postal Employee Curling, which grew to a bonspiel that rivalled the briar in size. After his retirement he and Val built their dream home on the Winnipeg River near Pinawa. In 1998 they became snow birds and purchased a trailer in Weslaco, Texas. While there Don became coach of the senior slow pitch team and was most proud of playing all of his nineteen players. Upon their return home in 2000 Don and Val became members of the Lee River Slow Pitch Team. The tournaments and camping trips with the team were a source of great fun. In 2004 Don was elected coach of the team. Don's greatest love was his family. He truly enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete in various activities. He taught us to love life and always see the bright side of things. The family extends their thanks to Cancer Care and Beausejour Hospital staff, especially Drs. P. Czykowski and G. Campbell. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 8 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Don's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3. • We meet very few people in our life who we can call a "true" friend. Don was one of those. His laughter and enthusiasm was infectious. I feel privileged to have known Don for close to 50 years. He truly was "one of the good guys". Barb and I extend our heartfelt condolences over your loss of a husband and friend, father, grandfather, and brother. - Posted by: Barry & Barb Ivison (Friend) on: Mar 10, 2005

  • Val, please accept our condolences on the passing of Don. We both have had the fortune of knowing him for over 25 years through Canada Post and curling. Don will always be known as a outgoing and happy individual who selfishly volunteered his time at many worthwhile projects.
