FREDERICK WILLIAM SNELL DCM (1920 - 2005) peacefully at Seven Oaks Hospital, Sunday, March 6, 2005. Fred was born and lived in Stony Mountain for most of his life. Recently he moved to Winnipeg, Lutheran Home, with his wife Jean. Fred is survived by loving wife Margaret Jean of 60 years. Children, Ken (Sheila), Wendy (Randy); grandchildren, Derrick (Micki), Darryl, Christopher (Amanda), Charlene (Craig), Laura; great-granddaughters, Emma, Kadence and Brooke and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents, Jack and Elizabeth, brothers, Doug, Jim, Lorne and Robert; sisters, Alice, Beatrice, Dot, Elizabeth and Margaret. Fred actively served with the PPCLI, 1939 to 1945 and received the Distinguished Conduct Medal and rank of Sergeant. After the war, he worked at the Stony Mountain Federal Penitentiary until his retirement in 1979. Fred was an active member in PPCLI Association, Penitentiary Retired Officers, Masonic Lodge 134, Inwood and Teulon Golf and Country Club. Life memberships in the Royal Canadian Legion 142, Stony Mountain Curling Club. He was also involved as a Military Olympic Triathlete during the war. He played hockey and baseball. Fred also had a love of flowers and birds. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. at the Mackenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall. Rev. Bill Vincent will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Easter Seals or the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements.
