EDWARD (CORBY) ALFRED CORBEIL October 4, 1924 - March 12, 2005 It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather, Edward (Corby) Corbeil, after a brief illness, with his family by his side. He will be forever cherished and missed by his daughters, Karen (Randy) Harris, Janice (Terry) Tomlinson, Teri (Jim) Nordstrom, Diane (Sandy) Shindleman; his grandchildren, Philip, Andrea, Leah, Trevor, Jesse and Annie, and his dear friend and companion Mary Dalinger. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, and in 1999 by his beloved wife of 45 years, Margaret (Babe). He is survived by his sister-in-law Elsie Corbeil; brother-in-law Wally Thomson and many nieces and nephews. Ed was born in St Boniface, MB on October 4, 1924, the youngest of five children, and his childhood years were spent in Fort Garry. From an early age he was destined to be an entrepreneur, and started on that path at the Amphitheatre and Osborne Stadium. Throughout the years he owned and operated many businesses, including Corby's Popcorn at the Winnipeg Arena and Stadium, the Nut House, The Big Slipper, Summerland, and Corby's Skate Shop. He was also an avid sports enthusiast, and hockey was his greatest love. His passion for hockey included ownership of the Winnipeg Monarchs in the 1960's. Ed also loved to golf, and was an accomplished curler, having won the Newsmens' Bonspiel on more than one occasion. Ed was a devoted family man, and loved spending time with family and friends. He built a cottage at Falcon Lake which the family enjoyed for many years. He loved to drive and he took his family on many fun trips in the family motor home to places including Expo 67, Disneyland, Las Vegas, and Disney World. He retired early and spent his winters in Palm Springs, CA with Margaret, until she was stricken with Alzheimers disease. For the next ten years he selflessly devoted himself to caring for her, first at home, then during his daily visits with her in the personal care home. His courage, compassion and dedication during this trying time were truly incredible. Following Margaret's passing, Ed found great companionship when he met Mary. Together they stayed very active spending much of their time bike riding, travelling and playing cribbage. Ed was generous and also had a concern for those in less fortunate circumstances than he. He had a great sense of humour and would light up a room with his smile. He loved life and lived his life to the fullest. Ed was very close to his daughters, proud of his grandchildren and looked forward to times when they could all be together, either for a celebration, or for no particular reason at all. His daughters cherished his love and support. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at MICU at the St. Boniface Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion shown to their Dad. Active pallbearers will be Ed's sons-in-law and grandsons, Messrs: Randy Harris, Terry Tomlinson, Jim Nordstrom, Sandy Shindleman, Phil Harris, Trevor Tomlinson, Jesse Nordstrom. Honorary pallbearers will be Messrs: Jack Mason, Ian McTavish, Robert Shindleman. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Boniface Research Foundation, ph: 204-237-2067.
