ALICE HANLEY GROVER After a brief illness, our mother, Alice Grover, was gathered into heaven on March 14, 2005. She died peacefully with her family encircling her with their love. Born Alice Hanley, into a large Winnipeg family on July 29, 1914, Mum met and married her lifelong partner, Cecil Grover, in 1938. Six rambunctious children followed, Brian (Cilla, deceased) of Ottawa, Richard (Elizabeth), Jane (Harry), Kathleen, Sheila (Greg) and Paul (Michele) of Calgary, also 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. As well, Mum is survived by her younger sister Norah McDougal of Ottawa. She was predeceased by her husband Cec in 1968. What a great mum she was! She raised her six children with a deep unconditional love, while imparting her strong values to them. As an energetic grandmother, she introduced a wicked sense of humour into her dealings with the younger generation, and they loved her for it. Mum's great joie de vivre included being an unrepentant smoker and an aficionado of her happy hour vodka treat. Sunny afternoons at Victoria Beach saw Mum holding court in the sand, with an audience that often spanned several generations. The family would like to offer sincere thanks to the outstanding professionals at St. Boniface Hospital 6th floor, and especially to the Palliative Care Unit at Riverview Health Centre who cared for our mother with compassion and respect. A funeral mass in celebration of a life well lived will be held on Thursday, March 17, the feast of St. Patrick, at Holy Rosary Church at 510 River Ave. at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alice's memory to Rossbrook House, an inner city recreational facility for Aboriginal children, located at 658 Ross Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 0M1. Life is changed, not ended.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Alice: To Julian you were his No. 1 Favourite Client on his paper route. You always had a friendly chat in the morning with him making his day. You weren't his Nana; you were everyone's Nana at Victoria Beach. To me, along with Olive you were one of the great anchors of your generation at Victoria Beach. Alexandra Beach will never be the same without you. You passed on all your finest qualities to the next two generations. May they uphold all the best family traditions with sundowners and winning tennis tournaments for many generations to come. Rob - Posted by: Rob and Julian Stewart (Friend) on: Mar 23, 2005

  • To all the Grover Family, So many great memories of times spent with Alice at her Victoria Beach cottage. She was a wonderful role model to all who encountered her as she lived her life fully, on her own terms. Her legacy is immeasurable and far-reaching in the lives of those she touched. You are in my thoughts and prayers. With heartfelt condolences, Pat - Posted by: Patricia Kenney, Toronto (Friend) on: Mar 22, 2005

  • What a woman! My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I bet she's there with Olive right now having a Vodka and a cigarette. I'm privileged to have been touched by her. She always had a cold glass of kool-aid at her cottage and a few sage words of advice just like my grandmother Olive. Love, David - Posted by: David Rozzi (Family) on: Mar 16, 2005
