HARRY SMITH

Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHARRY SMITH May 17, 1924 - March 17, 2005 With courage, on March 17, 2005, at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 80. Harry was predeceased by parents Roy Hodgson Smith and Elinor Hilton Smith; sister Celeste Rathwell; first wife Barbara Janet Smith (nee Sparrow); and daughter Pamela Ruth Smith. Harry will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, Roy William (Carolyn) Smith and Blair Randall (Elizabeth) Smith; grandchildren, Lindsay, Shannon, Janet, Harrison and Alana. Harry will also be missed by his second wife Elsie Smith; stepdaughter Lori Mathews; nephews, Thomas Rathwell, Bill Sparrow; nieces, Patricia Christie, Michelle Bates, Jan Zaharia; and by many cousins, extended family and friends. Harry grew up in Winnipeg, attending St. James Collegiate. During the Second World War Harry served as a B-24 Liberator Captain with R.A.F. Squadron 358 in East Asia and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Harry received his civil engineering degree from the University of Manitoba and married Barbara Janet Smith (nee Sparrow). He was subsequently employed by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. and was especially proud of five projects he was involved in: the Chalk River and Pinawa Nuclear Research Stations, the Nelson River Power Transmission Line and assignments in Buenos Aires and Seoul. After retirement Harry maintained his involvement with flying through the Winnipeg Flying Club, the Canadian Warplane Heritage, the Wartime Pilots and Observers Assoc., Burma Bombers, Western Canadian Aviation Museum and Army Navy Air Force Veterans in Canada. Harry was always ready to support his family, friends and community in all their endeavours and projects. The family would like to thank Drs. Scurrah, Sharkey, Maxwell and the staff at the Victoria General Hospital Oncology Unit for their comfort and care. A remembrance service will be held on Tuesday, March 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with an interment and reception to follow. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
