ALBERT FREDERICK MAGSON passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 in Lynn Lake, MB. He fought a long hard battle with cancer. Born December 9, 1936 in Birch River, MB, Al moved with his family to The Pas, MB where he met his wife Mary. The newlyweds moved to Lynn Lake and spent 47 years there. Lynn Lake was Al's home. He had many interests. The great outdoors called to him; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and just being outside summer and winter. He also loved to play the guitar and entertain, he played with many bands over the years. Another love he had was flying and was so proud when he obtained his pilot's license. He wanted to fly commercially but decided that he did not want to be away from home. He also took up boxing and later karate and was very good at both. He worked for the mines in Lynn Lake and was an electrician's helper, hoistman, heavy-duty mechanic and machine operator. He also built two homes in Lynn Lake, a beautiful cabin at Tenklei Lake with the help of the whole family. He started an outfitting service and built two more cabins, one at South Camp and one at Mackie Lake. He maintained that a man should be able to take care of his own home, so he was the plumber, electrician, carpenter, electronics technician, appliance repairman, car mechanic and of course entertainer. Al played baseball and later learned to play hockey when he saw how much fun his son was having. At 60, he was still playing hockey and could outskate a lot of the younger fellows. When three of his daughters were old enough, he coached their hockey team and they won the trophy that year. He also coached their baseball team. Al had many, many friends in all walks of life; he was never judgmental and was very forgiving. But he did have a temper when he was working on something. Over the years he volunteered his time with many organizations. He served on the board of the L.L. Friendship Centre, LL Minor Hockey, Senior Hockey, Commercial Hockey, Old Timers Hockey, L.L. Karate Club, Lynn Lake Hospital, was a Scoutmaster, Volunteer Firefighter, belonged to the LL Toastmasters Club and was an active Canadian Ranger. He belonged to the Anglican Church and served as an usher for St. Simon's Church for a number of years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Mary; his son Fred (Lorraine); his daughters, Sharita (Marcel), Shannon (Wyn), Leitta (Randy) and Judith; 15 grandchildren whom he loved very dearly. Grandpa could fix anything. Also mourning are his brothers, Franklin (Lynn), Edward (Joyce); his sisters, Helen Patrick, Myrtle Jackson (Earl Herman), Anne Graham (Robert Graham); his in-laws, Eileen Browne, Stanley Fitzner, Hilda Fitzner, David Innes (Janet), Betsy Innes and Douglas Innes, adopted son Ron MacDonald and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both his parents George and Isobel Magson; his sisters, Hilda Lavell and husband George, Doreen Primrose and husband Earl, Bernice Primrose and husband Bud , and Glena Norman and husband Kris and numerous nieces and nephews; father and mother-in-law David and Elsie Innes; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Innes, Stella Mulholland and husband Les, Rita Fitzner; brothers-in-law, Fred Fitzner, Robert Innes, Warren Browne. In 2001 he lost a wonderful son-in-law, Angus Archibald to cancer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al's memory to the Cancer Society and/or a charity of your choice. In accordance with Al's wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment will take place at the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg in late June or early July. A memorial service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall on Tuesday, March 22 at 2:00 p.m. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses and staff at the Lynn Lake Hospital and our many friends for their care and concern especially Ray Vezeau Al's buddy. • Al was a special friend. He was one of the kindest and most thoughtful individuals I ever met. I was one of maybe 3 Inuit kids in Lynn Lake, and he took me under his wing and put me in his band the Harmonies, even though I could not play. Well, he, and his good friend Ray Vezeau, not only taught me how, but the right attitude to go with it, and with life.
